Impact investing in India — $1.6 bn, 220 startups and miles to go

Impact investing, defined typically as the funding of businesses that address consumers at the bottom half of the pyramid, has gained visible traction in India over the last 4-5 years. It is still marginal though relative to mainstream early stage investing activity. While mainstream early stage investing has scaled $1 billion per year for the last three years, impact investing reports much lower numbers — just $1.6 billion invested to date across 220 enterprises since 2000, according to the first comprehensive Indian Impact Investing Report released last week by impact sector focused advisory and research company Intellecap.
