Tata-NEN Hottest Startups Awards has released its top 30 nominees — shortlist in print media partner Mint. I’m disappointed to note that 16 out of the 30 shortlisted, from which five will be declared winners after another round of public voting, are related in one way or the other to technology. It would be interesting to know how the overall 588 nominees break out in terms of sectors. Would technology still dominate?
My favourites from the Top 30:
Daily Dump — Cleantech
Ecomove Solutions — Bicycle rentals
Evam Entertainment — Theatre
SammaaN Foundation – Organized cycle rickshaw services
Interestingly 24 out of the 30 are self-funded and many of the companies have been around for a couple of years at least. That’s a good sign in the context of an imminent slowdown in the country that will test the the sustainability of many of these business models.
