BarCamp Season 3

Just signed up for Camp Icarus, a university level BarCamp in Mumbai next Saturday. The objective of the camp is to connect students with working professionals. Browsed through the presentation topics lined up so far and (hmm…) I do hope that the students have more to look forward to by the time the camp rolls in. Most of the university level BarCamps I’ve been to in Mumbai have been in the smaller engineering colleges (usually as part of the annual college fest) and offer interesting insights into student minds outside the IIT circuit. I do wish non-engineering colleges would take to such BarCamps as well — maybe they have and I don’t know — because entrepreneurship in India is as much (perhaps more) about non-technology ideas as technology ones.

Meanwhile, since we’re in September, we are also entering the peak season for startup networking in the country and BarCamps lead the charge. Here’s the menu:

  • BCB7 (September 13th & 14th) — BarCamp Bangalore’s seventh edition concluded over the weekend. Have not been able to find too many great posts on the camp.
  • BCM4 (October 4th & 5th) — Mumbai is having its fourth edition and spreading it over two days. I was not too impressed with the content of the last edition. A few prospective sessions are up already. Aditi Guptas’ session on startup brand consultancy should be useful. Hope the Wi-Fi works this time.
  • BCD5 (October 11th & 12th) — Delhi follows Mumbai with its fifth edition. These guys are working on getting some international perspectives to the camp. Should be interesting to see how that plays out. Nice logo.
  • BCP5 — Pune turns in its fifth BarCamp this October but they are yet to fix on a date. They seem to have initially settled on October 25th and then realized it was the Diwali weekend. This one might go into November.

While at the BarCamps, do also keep tabs on what’s happening at Eureka! 2008 and the upcoming TiE-ISB Connect 2008 business plan contests.
